Characteristics Of The Best Shoes For Sesamoiditis

We are going to break the best shoes for sesamoiditis into three groups – zero-drop minimalist shoes, zero-drop maximilist shoes and “transition” shoes.

The best shoes for sesamoiditis will have the following features:

  1. Anatomically shaped wide toe-boxes where you toes can spread wider than the balls of your feet
  2. Zero heel-to-toe drop, this will keep your heels and the balls of your feet aligned in the same plane
  3. No toe spring, you also want your toes to lie in the same plane as the balls of your feet and heels. This also helps keep the natural layer of fatty tissue under the balls of your feet.

These features are typical in minimalist shoes that allow the foot to move in it’s natural alignment. The problem with minimalist shoes is that for someone who has been wearing regular/conventional footwear all their life, it is difficult to transition to these shoes.

That is where maximalist and transition shoes come in. They offer the best of both worlds – between the minimalist and conventional shoe.

These shoes allow the user to transition from the conventional restricting footwear to footwear that allows the foot to move in a more natural gait.

Conclusion

Sesamoiditis is a tricky injury to heal but holistic treatment of the right type of shoe, rest, and inflammation control can put you on your way to a quick recovery.

Remember when searching for the best shoes for sesamoiditis, look for shoes that are widest at the toe and have a zero heel-to-toe drop. This, along with taping and exercise will put you on the path to a speedy recovery from sesamoiditis.

1 thought on “Best Shoes For Sesamoiditis”

  1. I write as a non-runner with sesamoiditis — along with a host of other foot conditions commonly associated with high arches (bunion; hammertoe). I’m using toe separators, metatarsal pads, custom orthotics — all of which require a very wide shoe, and one that can accommodate a high arch.

I’m sorry to say that neither the Altra Paradigm nor Provision could meet the bill. These two shoes could not accommodate my high arches, even without my array of accessories.

However, the Altra Via Olympus & Via Olympus 2 are the *only* Altras featuring the brand’s “original” wide footbed. They also provided the needed “volume” — height — for high arches. I bought mine in a full size above my regular size, and so far, so very good.
